I just read the book and then I watched this movie. This is just like Saigon in the 1960s and early 70s. The Vietnamese are like the Norwegians and the Nazis are like the Americans. The Norwegians eventually won as did the Vietnamese. The Nazis lost as did the Americans. The parallels are striking. I agree that this should be mandatory viewing in every American school.

I'm trying to find one to revisit from only 3 months ago that I deleted from my downloads..... Plot was a henpecked artist man who liked his art but felt no one else did so he kept it tucked away. He meets a gorgeous woman and falls for her not knowing she has a smarmy boyfriend who she tells about the art and they decide to attach her name to the paintings that he gifts her and more they begin smuggling from his collection. She's a hit but because she didn't make them, she stays hidden and anonymous and of course, makes excuses for not allowing anyone to see her paint. They end up dead somehow and the closing scene is of the old man being haunted by their ghost screams then slowly and sadly walking up the street and past the gallery that is selling off "her" now high valued collection.

Great movie, aways loved Der Bingle but be forewarned there's a character who's in blackface. It's true that people have fond memories of this time period but most everyone waxed nostalgic. But it can be a historical lesson for those too young to know about this horrible behavior. Really hard to watch, Thanks for the upload!

Really good movie. Holden is fantastic....even Graves. There is never a dull moment in this movie. New York Times review of this movie in 1953 thought it was one of the best movies of the year. Holden thought Lancaster and Montgomery Clift should have won Best Actor for the movie "From Here to Eternity." Hard not to like the depth of acting in this movie by Holden.....He went on to make "Picnic" and so many incredible movies.
